Kept on iPhone Duo

How Kept fills iPhone Duo closed, open sideways and open upright - where Capture, the menu and the side column sit in each pose, which screens open as two pages, and how folding keeps what you were looking at.

Kept follows the space the phone gives it. Closed, you see one page beside the side column. Open sideways, the page beside the dock is the page you were holding; the other page adds context. Open upright and flat, Kept uses one tall page. A partial fold keeps both pages clear of the crease, including at larger text sizes.

The side column

The phone chooses which edge holds the column. From top to bottom:

  1. The door. Your avatar fills a circular photograph inside the glass door and opens navigation. The upright rail uses the same circular crop. A page or layer can replace it with Back or Close.
  2. This page's actions. Focus, view choices and other actions share one capsule near the bottom. More holds the current page's commands; list view choices have their own View options control. When room is short, remaining actions move into More.
  3. Search. Opens Quick Find from every destination.
  4. Capture. Adds something to Kept. Capture and Search step aside while the software keyboard needs their space.

In a column pose each page owns its title and its actions live in the column. A page with its own heading, such as Calendar, uses the whole band. Upright, the horizontal controls return with Search available on Calendar too. Tasks and Goals show plain headings there; the avatar opens navigation.

Hold the door, an action or Search briefly to see its label. Slide along the actions to read another label; release on an action to use it, or move away to cancel. Capture keeps its own hold gesture. The first column session shows the labels once. The door starts about 20 points below the lowest system status item. Extra transparent space in the system bar does not move it down; an active recording or status indicator does. Calendar can show its date and view as tiles; a view tile opens a native menu. A page or tool can keep Search while hiding Capture. While you type, the door stays below the system status column. Actions that fit stay together above the keyboard; the rest are in More. Opening Control Center, Notification Center or an alert while typing keeps the actions above the keyboard. When the keyboard leaves or you finish folding, Search and Capture return to their usual positions.

On a spread, Capture and the setup capture step stay on the physical page beside the dock and clear the hinge. Capture keeps Save below its scrolling form and above the keyboard. On a column pose, the header, typed source and fields share the scroller; when words are ready, the whole Event, Task and Note choice row clears the scroll fade. Scroll back to edit the source or down for more fields. Save stays in place at larger text sizes too.

Closing an editor through the scrim, a swipe or the dock uses the same unsaved-change check. An editor can supply its own header and dock controls. Screen readers can find the card title as a heading.

Tap the avatar or swipe right from the leading 80 points to choose a destination. Vertical scrolling keeps its gesture, and a pushed page can still swipe Back. In every pose, navigation is revealed underneath the retained content: the content panel slides as one rigid surface, so both pages keep their readable widths. The drawer carries its soft-to-sharp blur through the opening motion and is clear at rest. On Duo with Reduce Motion, the content moves straight to its resting position while navigation fades into view. Ordinary iPhone keeps its existing drawer motion. On the cover too, Settings and its sections keep the same reading width and line breaks throughout the reveal.

Flat list-and-detail screens use a narrow context list and a wider detail page. When partially folded, each page stops before the crease. Upright and partially folded, the page in hand stays above the crease and context sits below it. The empty band does not take taps.

Settings uses the left page for its list and the right page for the selected section. The list opens below the rail at the profile row. Row titles stay on one line at standard text sizes and wrap at word boundaries at accessibility sizes. On the spread, each section has one page title; What Kept should know, Nutrition principles and Life areas keep Save in that page’s header. On the cover, flat upright and at accessibility text sizes, sections open with the native navigation bar, toolbar Save and Back. Save keeps a full-size target beside the title. Swipe Back or use VoiceOver escape to return to the list. A section pushed from the cover keeps its native navigation stack when you unfold, including its sub-pages. A section opened in the spread returns to the Settings list when you fold; complete edits in that page before folding. Profile’s goal rows and See all goals open through the same navigation stack. Going Back from a cover section leaves the earlier spread selection unchanged; that closed section does not reopen when you unfold. Selecting Settings again returns to the list. A screen without a second page keeps a comfortable reading width.

Today and Tasks

Today keeps the cover's cards on the page beside the dock. At accessibility text sizes on the flat open screen, Today fills the whole canvas beside the dock as one page. Unfolding keeps that column at its reading width from the first inner view, using the inner panel's safe-area band from the first lit frame. Folding brings the same column back without briefly showing the calendar or resizing its words. The open spread adds the living day on the left: a horizontal day card shows time left, planned time, events and suggested blocks, with the hour timeline and current-time line below. The right page keeps Top 3, Quick wins and Habits. Suggested times stay suggestions until confirmed on the calendar and avoid one another and events, with a short handoff between sessions. Tap a dashed suggestion to confirm it in place. Cards and opened priorities fit inside the Today page. An opened priority grows from its tile and closes into it; the calendar stays visible. The dock's X closes a priority; its sliders open Today settings. Upright, the horizontal day card sits above Top 3 and the rest of your day.

Tasks uses a narrow list beside the selected task's larger page. Minimal shows only the checkbox and two-line title, with the due date kept in VoiceOver. Focus from a task shows that task's title, 25 min, 45 min or Stopwatch, then Start. Starting keeps the task page open. Today and Tasks use one page upright.

Quick Find

Search opens one Quick Find across tasks and notes. It searches task titles, descriptions, why text, subtasks and cached comments, plus note titles and bodies. It also offers places, cached events and habits. Return opens the top result. Tasks, notes and events open over the page you were using, so closing the item returns there without a tab change. A note's Close and Delete return to that same page; deleting still offers Undo. If a note disappears while it is open, the page explains that it could not be opened and keeps Close available. Choosing a habit in search opens Habits without changing its completion.

All, Starred, Daily notes and Open tasks appear when they have something to show. Open tasks includes notes with unchecked items. Before you type, Recent shows places you opened, with recently edited items filling a short history.

On the cover and upright, results follow the field and chips in one card. Open sideways, the field, chips and Recent stay on the left and Results appears on the right. Nothing typed leaves the right page quiet. Typed words align with result titles. Recent keeps its own navigation rows; the best-match selection belongs to Results. The query, chosen filter and matching results survive folding and turning the phone, even if the card is recreated. A search opened during startup keeps its words when the side column arrives, including edits you make before it does. Closing Quick Find fades out the words and results together without clearing or shrinking the outgoing card. Its dock controls return to the page as soon as you close it. Opening it again starts with an empty field and All. Changing accounts clears the previous account’s search immediately.

Event results use human date and time labels such as Today · 12:30 PM. Subtask matches show the matching subtask line. Task titles use a single line in Recent and in title matches. A match in a description, why text, comment or subtask adds the matching text beneath the title. Due dates and task-status labels do not appear in these rows.

Quick Find focuses its field when the first layout is ready. Upright, the rail fades away while the card is open and returns when you close it.

Close in the column returns to your page. Search is marked selected while Quick Find is open. With Cloud AI enabled, Ask Kept sends the words in the field into the assistant.

Calendar

Calendar. The day you were reading on the cover stays on the right when you unfold. A scrolling month with coloured event chips opens on the left; pick a date to change the day. Day, 3 Day and Schedule keep this planner layout. Week and Month use both pages, with four days before the crease and three after it. The view menu sits beside the date title. Today and Calendars live in the side dock. Today returns to today's date and scrolls Day to now. Opening an event keeps its details clear of the dock. A spread event page has its own Close button; the cover card closes from the dock. Event actions stay in the dock. Dial-in numbers expand from one number. Partially folding the screen leaves space around the crease.

In the month-and-day planner, an event chip selects its day and brings its hour into view. Small marks show tasks, habits and workouts.

Jump to month keeps the planner's title with the requested month and year, including after you pick another date. Closing Capture after unfolding keeps the selected week visible. The Calendars card keeps its title and Done above its scrolling preferences and clear of the system column.

On the cover, expanding an event's dial-in numbers or notes keeps its card below the date title. Drag down from the heading or details while the details are at the top, tap the surrounding blur, or use Close to return to the day. Scrolling inside the details keeps its usual behavior.

Light, dark and folding

Facing page titles stay aligned when a page owns its header band.

The window and native tab containers use the page colour, including the home-indicator band at cold launch. Light and dark share the same geometry. Kept reads the window, system bar and hinge region rather than choosing a layout by device name; an ordinary iPhone keeps its existing single-page shell even when its window is wide.

Tasks opened on the sideways spread stay inside its list-and-detail workspace.

Opening or turning the phone moves the retained page layout in one continuous motion. The live window size, size classes, side-column edge and text size choose the new panel's layout in that same pass, so the first lit frame already uses the landing pose. The landing pose stays committed while those native measurements arrive; it does not leave a stretched column or squeezed spread on screen waiting for a later interaction. An upright inner page starts with its own status clearance and no side column, even while UIKit is still publishing the cover tuple; once the native inner measurement arrives, that measurement owns every edge. Layered Today content follows the same resolved clearance. Reduce Motion changes the geometry without the travel. The first launch uses its final layout directly. Each surface keeps its own selection, draft and reading state; an open Tasks card selected into the spread returns to that same card and cover reading position when folded. Goals, Habits and Settings stay on screen. Goals keeps the same first visible row when its list becomes a Duo page, and Notes keeps one readable cover canvas as soon as the phone has physically folded closed, without briefly drawing the book inside it. Habits keeps its card below the status column from the first frame. Support opens the support website; returning from it brings you back to Settings. Folding never replaces these destinations with a system More list. The page follows the opening motion without showing a picture of the closed layout. Brief partial angles during opening or closing keep the final page layout. Holding a partial fold still for300ms lets the pages settle clear of the crease, even when the system has not published a division region. Rotating that held fold keeps the crease on the new axis immediately. Small hinge adjustments keep the committed pages; between165° and172° the last posture holds, and a fully open reading returns directly to flat, cancelling any pending crease before a delayed partial reading can restore it. Small jitter around a gutter boundary does not restart the hold forever. Each width change uses the same retained-page motion, without crossfading a picture of an earlier layout. A partial fold leaves an empty band at the hinge. The Mac has no folding screen, so these layout rules apply to iPhone Duo.

Upright Goals keeps its idle first row below the inherited status clearance; opening a goal may then use the shell's full-bleed cover page.

Calendar’s view menu offers Schedule, Day, 3 Day, Week, Month and Year, followed by Previous, Next and Jump to month. The selected row keeps its glyph and the system checkmark. The dock has today's weekday and date plus Calendars, whose plus badge opens choosing and adding calendars. Upright, the date title and view menu share the navigation row with Today, Calendars and Search; the separate Calendar title and period row are gone. The calendar scrolls to the bottom edge, with room at the end for Capture.

On a spread, an event page has one glass Close button, Escape and a sideways swipe on its heading. Closing restores the month at its previous row and selection. The dock retains its navigation avatar and adds the event's More menu while Capture hides. On the cover the dock door closes the card. Cached events suppress the loading banner.

The month uses seven aligned columns with bounded colour chips. It opens with the selected week in the second row. The date heading shares the shell’s title band; the all-day band takes room only when needed. Event cards use one raised paper surface, and upright dial-ins start with one number and an expansion control.

Calendar legibility on the cover and spread

On Duo, Week stacks the cover's weekday above its date and keeps the spread's date row immediately below the title. All-day events fill the day event column. Narrow blocks omit time; a title uses up to three whole-word lines when its words fit, otherwise one truncated line. Very narrow overlaps show their tint and bar. The view menu keeps its current mode word beside one up/down caret. The current-time line passes behind opaque event blocks, with its marker in the hour gutter; past-block time text stays legible. Calendar's titles share the shell baseline, Month settles on a complete week and keeps its chips and rules clear of the stepped crease, and the connection prompt reserves its own row above the timeline. Plain iPhone retains its existing layout.

On unfolding, the cached day keeps its pager and reading position on the right while the already-mounted month reveals on the left. Folding back keeps the day visible. Upright with a crease, the calendar stays above the empty gutter and the month sits below it.

Schedule fills the upright page below the rail and continues to the bottom edge. Swipe its list sideways for the next or previous seven days. Folding keeps the month ready beside the same day; closing an event restores the month at the position you left it. A month scroll you start takes priority over its opening position.

Choosing the calendar view already on screen leaves an open event in place. When Week or 3 Day needs to prepare its columns, the event and current day stay visible until the new view is ready. A cancelled choice leaves you where you were. Folding dismisses an open view menu while keeping its control in the same calendar header.

Every Calendar view fits beside the system column, including its trailing dates and view menu. Folding keeps the month at the same week and position within that row as the cells change size. On the open Day, 3 Day and Schedule planner, Jump to month moves the left month and selected day while keeping your current view on the right.

Opening a task full screen keeps its placement stable as Duo changes posture. Temporary invalid layout measurements do not replace the task’s last usable frame.
