iPhone tips

Kept keeps its screens quiet, which means a few of the best moves are not labeled. Here they are. A shorter version lives in Settings → Tools → Tips & shortcuts, along with a card that sets up the Action Button or a Shortcut for Capture.

At larger text sizes, screen headings grow through the first accessibility size, and a one-word heading scales down to fit rather than being cut off. Today's note settings remain reachable. Reminder decisions keep their action below the scrolling explanation, and the last row has room to scroll above Capture.

Quick log from the button

Touch and hold the round Capture button, slide up to Task, Event, Note, or Meal (when Body is on), and let go. The sheet opens with that kind locked, skipping detection. Use it when you already know what you are about to write.

Star a note with a swipe

In Notes, swipe a note left and choose Star. It moves into Starred at the top of Notes on iPhone and Mac. Pin to sidebar is separate: it puts the note under Pinned in the navigation drawer.

Pinch the calendar

Pinch in on Week to pull back to Month, and on Month to reach Year. Pinch out on Month to drop into Week, and on Week into Day. The date heading opens the view menu: Schedule, Day, 3 Day, Week, Month, Year, and Jump to month.

Swipe the calendar

Swipe a day left or right to move by a day. Swipe the week strip to move by a week.

Swipe a task done

Swipe right on any task row to complete it. No need to open it. Swipe left for Not today on a Top 3 row, or Tomorrow in Tasks.

Format on selection

Select text in a note, then open the arrow in the menu that appears for Highlight, Add link, and more.

Tap the title, or the avatar

Your avatar and the screen's title both open the menu from any main screen. Notes is the exception: there the title opens the list picker, so use the avatar. On Calendar, the date heading under the title opens the view picker.

Pull down to search

On Today, pull down past the top to open Quick Search and Ask Kept. On Notes and Tasks, the same pull opens a local Quick Find instead. Notes searches titles and bodies and can narrow the list to Starred, Daily notes, or notes with open tasks. Tasks searches tasks, areas, filters, and tags. With a hardware keyboard attached, / still opens Quick Search from anywhere.

Shake to report

Shake the phone to open the bug report sheet, including while typing in a note or child page. During Capture or the meal camera, shake keeps its system behavior. Repeated shakes while the report is open or just dismissed do not open another prompt. Settings → Shake to report turns reporting by shake off and restores system shake-to-undo. See Report a bug.

Hold the icon

Touch and hold the Kept icon on the Home Screen for Capture, Log a meal, Start focus, and, when there is one, a fourth action that follows your day: Resume focus, Complete next, or your next event.

Keep the keyboard company

In a note or a task description, tap + on the keyboard bar for Insert, everything that adds something to the note, or Aa for Style, everything that changes the line you are on. Neither needs a slash, both open with a search field, and the selector inside the sheet moves between them without closing it. Style shows each choice drawn the way it will look and marks choices that are applied or mixed across a selection. VoiceOver hears Applied or Mixed, and if a style cannot run it also hears why. At larger text the names wrap so they stay whole. A choice closes the sheet and puts you back on the line. On a wide workspace, the tools stay beside the note and follow the line or selection you move to.

In a task description on iPhone, a / has no room for the small palette, so it opens a sheet called Add a block with the whole palette in the same order a note shows it: headings and the other text styles first, then lists, then blocks and media. Keep typing after the slash to search all of it at once.

Let widgets do the checking

The Habits widget checks habits in place and the Tasks widget completes tasks. Both offer undo.

Duo dock

On the cover and open landscape, the page title stays above the content. The right dock holds the door back or close, the current page's actions in one capsule, More, Search and Capture. View options holds list commands; More holds the current object's actions. When the keyboard leaves less room, secondary actions move into More.

Quick Find on Duo

Search in the dock, the drawer and the upright rail opens Quick Find. The field stays at the top with All, Starred, Daily notes and Open tasks. Chips with no matches in the library stay hidden. Open tasks includes notes with unchecked tasks.

On an open landscape spread, the field, chips and Recent stay on the left. Results appear on the right as you type. With the field empty, the right page remains visible beneath the dim. Folding keeps the query and results position. A partial fold leaves the crease empty.

Quick Find searches cached task titles, descriptions, why text, comments and subtasks, and note titles and the text inside notes. Full-text body results join local matches. A result opens its destination; choosing a habit does not complete it. With Cloud AI enabled, Ask Kept hands the words to the assistant.
